Acne Types

Acne is a common skin disorder characterized by clogged pores and pimples. More than four out of five people between the ages of 12 and 24 develop acne at least once. It's not uncommon for acne to occur in people in their 20s and 30s.Some adult women experience acne due to hormonal changes associated with pregnancy or their menstrual cycles.

There are many different types of acne. Here, we'll discuss the most commonly known types of acne.

Acne Vulgaris

This is the most common form of acne. Acne lesions last less than two weeks. It is a condition that mainly affects young adults but may persist or even become more severe in adulthood. Most acne sufferers have oily skin. Acne usually occur on the face, back and chest.

Whiteheads

These are created when the openings of hair follicles become clogged and blocked with oil or sebum and dead skin.

Blackheads

These are similar to whiteheads, but are open to the skin surface and darken.

Pimples

These are raised, reddish spots that signal inflammation or infection in the hair follicle.

Papules

Papules are small, red, tender bumps with no head. Do not squeeze a papule. It will do no good, and may exacerbate scarring.

Nodules

Nodules are much larger and can be quite painful. Sometimes they can last for months. Nodules are large, hard bumps under the skin's surface. DO NOT attempt to squeeze such a lesion. You may cause damaghe to the skin and the lesion may last for months.

Cysts

Cysts are similar to nodules, but they are pus-filled. These can have a diameter of 5mm or more across. Scarring is common and they can be painful. Squeezing a cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last for months.
