What are the causes of acne?

The most important factors that contribute to the development of acne are:
  • Excessive production of sebum (oil)
  • Irregular shedding of dead skin cells that results in irritation of hair follicles
  • Bacteria buildup

  • Pimples or acne is born When the hair follicles get clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Follicles are attached to sebaceous glands. These glands secrete an oily substance known as sebum. Sebum lubricates the hair and the skin. Sebum goes through the opening of the hair follicle onto the surface of the skin. When sebum is produced in excess, it clogs the hair follicle and solidifies as a plug.

This causes the follicle to swell and produce a pimple or a whitehead. Or, the plug could be open to the surface and may darken, producing a blackhead. When the clogged hair follicle becomes inflamed or infected, a pimple is developed. If the inflammation develops deep inside hair follicles, it produces lumps under the surface of the skin. These lumps are called cysts.

Research is still going on to find out what causes the increased production of sebum. Many factors such as hormones, bacteria, and heredity do play a role.

Foods have little effect on acne. Acne also isn't caused by poor hygiene. In fact, scrubbing the skin too hard or cleansing with harsh soaps can cause irritation, which can make acne worse.

    What are the Risk Factors?

Acne is provoked and aggravated by the hormonal imbalances in your body. Hormone imbalances are very common in:

  • Teenagers.
  • Females, just a couple of days before their periods.
  • During pregnancy.

  • Other risk factors are:
  • Exposing the skin to greasy or oily substances.
  • Heredity. If your parents had acne, you may be likely to develop it too.
  • Friction on the skin caused by items such as helmets, tight collars etc.
